Why not make the Spirit of Decorum Historic Vehicle Tour a part of a long weekend here in the Chiltern area The Royal Wedding will be held on the Friday and the tour on the following Sunday.

Entrants

Hello and welcome to the Spirit of Dacorum Historic Vehicle Tour entrant's webpage.

Over 200 vehicles have booked for the tour and there are no places left. However, do not give up, just come as a spectator. You can see all the cars, talk to the drivers and enjoy the entertainment. If you want to enter click on "Entry" on the left menu and ignore the exortation to send in a photograph and a description of your vehicle.

The Spirit of Dacorum Historic Vehicle Tour is open to all pre 1973 vehicles; some later cars of distinction will also be present but these will be sourced by the organisers. The tour is designed for entrants and their passengers to journey through the beautiful Chilterns area enclosed by the Borough of Dacorum and enjoy the scenery, hospitality and camaraderie present at such events, as well as being a part of a magnificent static display at the end of the route.

If you are familiar with the event, have already decided from where you want to start the tour, just click on Entry in the left hand menu.
If you are NOT familiar with the event read on:

From a spectators point of view it allows the public to enjoy the event and see a series of historic vehicles of all ages in motion as well as in a static display. So often historic cars are only seen standing stationary in museums, exhibitions, auctions and as we all know, parked in fields during the summer car/ motorcycle meets.

Vehicles will commence the tour from one of a choice of four start points in attractive locations around Dacorum; Ashridge, Chipperfield, Markyate and Tring. Your start point will be allocated on a first come first served basis by the organisers. At the appropriate time, in accordance with marshal instructions, Entrants will drive "the Route" visiting each of the other start points during their journey and arrive finally at The Marlowes in Hemel Hempstead to form a static display where you can join the other entrants and show your vehicle to the public.

Just as before, The Marlowes will be set up in 'party atmosphere' with bands and attractions. Your vehicle will be a draw but so too will be other visiting ancient and unusual vehicles, a magnificent classic race team and perhaps as last time if available, one of the current seasons Formula 1 cars.

Entrants will receive a commemorative plaque which must be attached to their vehicle during the run as well as various "goodies" typical of such events.

As 2009, the 2011 event will be fully marshalled; we had a great time and no trouble of any kind in 2009 and we all want to keep it that way.

Please remember this event is designed to raise money for the Dacorum Community Trust (DCT) - a charitable organisation with no affiliation to the Dacorum Council. DCT raises money to help people in real trouble; not spongers. A small part of your £25 entry fee will help the charity to raise money while you have lots of fun.

To Enter

Please note, you can only Enter online. If you do not have an email ask your family or friends to process the Entry for you.

Entry consists of four stages and depends on

  1. On-line Registration
  2. Provision of a Photograph
  3. Provision of a description
  4. Receipt of a £25 Entry Fee

For On-line Registration

  1. Go to the "Routes" page and decide which of the starting points appeals to you, if you do not mind which one, you can leave it up to us to decide.
  2. Click on Entry on the left menu, read the rules and carry on to register your vehicle and enter contact information.
  3. You may go directly to Entry from the "Routes" page

History

The first Spirit of Dacorum Historic Vehicle Tour took place on 3rd May 2009.

Two hundred vehicles of ages ranging from 1908 to 1972 spent the morning touring the Chiltern areas of outstanding natural beauty formed by the Dacorum Borough.

The drivers and passengers had all commenced their tour from one of four different start venues scattered around the area, Ashridge, Chipperfield, Markyate and Tring. They departed each venue in batches of 50 and were "flagged" away by Lady Verulam the Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire and the Mayors of Dacorum, Berkhamsted and Tring.

In the early afternoon the drivers and passengers arrived at The Marlowes pedestrian precinct in Hemel Hempstead to the sound of a jazz band. The drivers collected their commemorative cup and goodies.

The cars and motorbikes then joined other tour colleagues to show their vehicles to a large and appreciative public. A static display of special vehicles was also on show ranging in age from a 1903 London to Brighton Veteran to a 2003 Supercar but the most modern and certainly the fastest was the 2009 Renault Formula 1 car kindly supplied by the main sponsor; Total UK.

The tour vehicles and special vehicles on display represented every decade in motoring history from 1900 and included a wonderful array of family and competition cars, a superb display of the finest motorbikes, amazing period vans, some very rare lorries and a fully crewed and operational 1930's fire engine.

The party atmosphere continued all through the afternoon and prizes were awarded for various classes including the Mayors choice and a special prize from the Mayor of Dacorum.

The main sponsor was TOTAL UK, the event had the approval from the VSCC and additional support was supplied by Arlon Printers, Frasers and Furnell Transport.

Why was it done?

David Furnell the organiser, a life-long historic car enthusiast is also a trustee of the Dacorum Community Trust (DCT), a Hemel Hempstead-based independent charity set up to help people in need.

Like many charities, DCT struggle with funding and David came up with the idea of the Spirit of Dacorum experience as a fund raising event for the charity. An organization of like minded enthusiasts was soon formed and the Historic Vehicle Tour was launched.

Routes

There are four starting points for the Tour of Dacorum shown on the left-hand manu. All the tours follow a similar path, thereby visiting each of the other starting points, before striking out for the Marlowes in the centre of Hemel Hempstead.

Ashridge

National Trust Ashridge Estate.

The National Trust's Ashridge Estate covers 2,000 acres of atmospheric mature woodlands and chalk downland at the north end of the Chiltern Hills.

The cars can be viewed from the main approach road to the Monument. There is also a network of footpaths and bridleways (including easy access trails) through the woodland which makes it easy to see a rich variety of wildlife like red kite and fallow deer. Ancient beech woods are carpeted with bluebells in spring and an excellent variety of fungi in autumn.

The rolling chalk grassland of nearby Ivinghoe Beacon is an important habitat for orchids and butterflies in summer; standing 250m above sea level, the view over Bucks and Herts from its summit (once an Iron Age hill fort) is stunning. It's also the northern end of the Ridgeway National Trail and Icknield Way.

There is also a visitor centre, shop, café and car parking near the tour's start point.

Chipperfield's Common is the best known and valued village feature and was gifted in 1936 to the local authority to be maintained in consultation with the people of Chipperfield. It extends to over 100 acres and is well used by local residents and visitors alike. Most of the woodland is secondary and varies in age between 80 and 176 years with some large mature sweet chestnut trees regarded as veterans of great historical and landscape importance estimated to date back to the early 1600's.

The cars will then be on public display until 4.00pm for you to come and take a closer look and, perhaps, chat to the drivers.

Spectators are welcome to come to all the start points to see the cars set off as well as to watch them pass at points along the route.
